If you have not cleared your old items and cleaned the house, you still have 10 days before CNY. Before the New Year comes, it is one of the Chinese New Year customs to spring clean the entire house. The practical reason is to de-clutter your house, so it's more presentable to your guests when they visit. To some, it is to get rid off bad luck in the house. So your last cleaning can be done during the reunion dinner before the actual day of CNY and your traditional parents will most likely not allow you to use the broom to do any sweeping to "sweep" the luck away.

Cleaning the house also means settling all unfinished business to start the year afresh: Resolve conflicts with people around you, pay off debts, complete your work, etc.
